This particular appellation grows mainly Merlot, with other permitted grape varieties such as Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carmenère. When you hear the term “right bank” in relation to Bordeaux wines, just know that Merlot is going to make up the majority of the blend. This is mainly due to the fact that Merlot is an early flowering grape that can withstand early frost. In addition, Merlot grows well with the clay-limestone soil found on the right bank.
